Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate the revenue potential from replacing fossil fuel with biofuel.
Shipping gets charged for every tonne of CO2eq it emits, and the rules tighten every few years. Move the year slides and see how the impact of regulations increases.
The calculation assumes a biodiesel well-to-wake intensity of 12 gCO₂eq/MJ. The surplus biodiesel generates under the IMO NZF follows a forecast path as estimated by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, from $243 per tonne of CO₂eq in 2029 to $380 in 2040; the surplus under FuelEU Maritime follows an assumption by ZERO44, from €150 per tonne of CO₂eq in 2026 to €437 in 2040; fuel prices stay flat at entered values; the inset value stays flat at an assumed €120 per inset; the EU allowance price follows a forecast by Pietzcker et al. (2021), from €111 per tonne of CO₂eq in 2026 to €222 in 2040. The IMO Net-Zero Framework is assumed to enter into force in 2029, using the targets as approved at MEPC 83. The numbers are illustrative for one tonne only.
